The Town Council meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. unless a public hearing is planned prior to the meeting. If you have a concern and would like to appear before Town Council, please contact the Town Manager at 988-2501.

BUSINESS LICENSE
Based on zoning, there are limitations to the types of businesses allowed in Town. The initial fee for a business license is $20 with $0.15 per $100 gross receipts each year. Forms are mailed January of each year, and licenses are due March 1. For more information, Call 988-2502.

"CLEAN UP MONTH"

Each year the Town designates one month from the April 15 to May 15 to be "clean up month". During this time, the Town sanitation crews will collect any special garbage free of charge, excluding appliances and any items the landfill will not allow such as paint, oil, and tires. During this month, you may stop by the Town Municipal Building and receive 5 free trash bags.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Monthly Fees: Residential $11.00 (In Town) - $16.50 (Out of Town) Dumpster Fees 2 yard - $6.00 per pick up 4 yard - $9.50 per pick up 6 yard - $12.50 per pick up 8 yard - $15.50 per pick up

Refuse must be secured in containers so it will not fall out, blow out, or be scattered by animals; and the containers should have handles for lifting. Receptacles should not weigh more than 40 pounds. Extra pickup items will be picked up free of charge; however, prior notification must be given to the Town of Tazewell before the garbage collection day. You will need to come by the office, fill out a Special Pickup Form and receive your stickers to place on the items. Brush may be picked up for a $32.00 fee per load and the brush must be 3’ or less in length. All garbage should be sat out by 8:00 a.m. on the designated garbage pickup day. Garbage pickup may be delayed on days of inclement weather. When the Town Municipal Building is closed for a holiday(s), the garbage scheduled for pick up on the day(s) closed will be picked up on the following business day. The Town now has a cardboard recycling program for businesses with collection on Monday and additional days as necessary. For information on the recycling program, please call 988-2501.

UTILITY BILLING

Utility bills for water, sewer, and garbage are mailed on the first business day of each month. This bill is due in full by the last business day of the same month or a 1.5% penalty is applied. Charges are based on gallon consumption. Charges are as follows:

EMERGENCY SERVICES

For emergencies related to water and sewer during office hours, simply call 988-2504. After hours, town crews can be dispatched through the 911 Office.

TAXES (REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY)

A resident of the Town is responsible for paying taxes to the Town of Tazewell as well as Tazewell County. Statement of taxes are mailed by November and due by December 5th. Real estate taxes are billed based on $0.25 per the $100, and the personal property taxes are billed based on $0.50 per the $100. Tax payments may be mailed or paid in person at the municipal office. VEHICLE DECALS

A town resident must purchase a town decal - not a county decal. Any vehicle, motorcycle, or utility trailer registered in the Town is required to display a decal. Forms are mailed in April and due May 15th of each year. Decals are $10.00 per vehicle. If a form is not received, present registration and one may be obtained and completed at the municipal office. COMMUNITY INFORMATION CHANNEL (Channel 14)

This channel is the community information channel on the local cable. This channel is used to provide citizens with general information about Tazewell and upcoming events which are planned throughout the area. To place an announcement on this channel bring your flyer or written information to the municipal offices or you may call 988-2501.

Rentals Available:

The American Legion Building is available to rent. The rate is $65.00 to rent it and a refundable deposit of $30.00 is also required.
The old JR High and Lincolnshire pool are also avaliable to rent from our recreation department.

Location And Geographic Features

The Town of Tazewell, Virginia is located in the geographical center of Tazewell County and is easily accessible via U.S. Route 19-460 and intersects with nearby Interstates 77 and 81 or by rail. It lies within the valley and ridge province of the Appalachian Highlands between the Appalachian Mountains on the southeast and the Cumberland Plateau and the Allegheny mountains on the northwest. Tazewell, which serves as the Tazewell County seat, is located about 22 miles southwest of Bluefield, West Virginia, 79 miles northeast of Bristol, Virginia and 85 miles west of Roanoke, Virginia.

History

The Town Of Tazewell was first settled in 1799, and was incorporated in 1870. It was first called Jeffersonville Township, the Tazewell Courthouse and finally, Tazewell. The Town serves as the County seat of Tazewell County and is one of the most historic areas in the County. The original character of the community has been preserved with its tree-lined streets and well-groomed Victorian houses.
